Aisling Miller awarded Pinks
DURC shooter Aisling Miller was recently awarded University pinks for her sporting prowess. Aisling is primarily an air rifle shooter, and has shot internationally, representing Ireland in InterShoot at the Hague and the European Championships in Helsinki. She will also take part in the London World cup in April which is a test event for the Olympic games later in the year.
Aisling is currently pursuing a Phd in Microbiology but has been a member of the rifle club since she was an undergraduate. Last year she was club captain and she continues to play an integral role in the running of the club despite the huge time commitment she must make to her training. She has received coaching with the national squad for the past 15 months, under the guidance of Matt Fox and Geoff Cooney.
Aisling has been ranked in Class A of the NTSA Classification list for some time now and is the highest ranked female air rifle shooter in the country. Her recent results in the European Championships means she is now eligible for a Tripartite Commission Olympic Quota Place (a wild card) for the London games. As well as her air rifle success she is also a talented smallbore shooter and was formerly ranked in class A before turning her attention to air rifle.
The presentation of the Pinks took place at the annual Sports Commons on the 28th of March in the Dining Hall. Cyril Smyth, DUCAC Chairperson was keen to lavish praise on Aisling drawing particular attention to her chances of competing in the London games.
Aisling’s performance on the international stage shows just what DURC shooters can accomplish with the right coaching team behind them. Hopefully we will see more similarly gifted sports people in the coming years.
